Wikis

I must be honest, I had heard of Wikis but never really understood what they were. However, now I know, I think they are such a great way of sharing ideas, learning about new subjects and being able to tapp into a whole wealth of information without having to do lots of work.

Some of the subjects I found on other Wikis were super for Libraries, such as Book Lists, Activity Ideas and Review Discussions. Book Clubs can post their opinions on their reads before they actually get together, as food for thought by other members.

I think it would be a good idea for the public to have access to the Library Wiki, as they could inform us of books, and activities they would like to see in their Library.

Another great use was on the University Staff training Wiki where you had links to other sites giving you assitance as you were training, this saves time, which is always at a premium where training is concerned.

RSS

Having just learnt about the RSS Feeds, yes they are a very good tool in respect that information you require or are interested in comes to you, however there is a constant flow pouring in which has to be read and sifted through.

In a week I believe I have received about 400 entries into my web address, which unless you are constantly running through them, may not be looked at.

However, it will certainly keep you up-dated with the most recent information and ideas, and should you be searching for particular subjects these will be at your fingers-tips.

This would be very helpful to the Library in keeping abreast of new innovations and systems.

GATEWAY TO HEAVEN

I found this picture on Flickr and to me it looks like a Gateway to Heaven.

The sky looks two diamentional, where another world is hidden, but its light is bursting forth for a just a short time, tempting us to discover more. It looks so inviting with the blue, white and yellow light, however the dark purple and deep reds seem to linger as a warning to be respected. If you look very closely you can see a large dragon across the sun, whose aim maybe to protect the gateway or to deter entry. Also the water is like a mirror reflecting the bright colours which has been shattered in places and the black image in the foreground reminds you of another life form just staring, watching and waiting.

These type of pictures are so interesting as they can be viewed by many different people and each one will be able to tell their own story of what they see. Whats yours ?www.flickr.com/photos/frozenblizzard/4412005197/

NewBlogger

Hi Fellow Bloggers

I have come through the first part of the training quite well and am happy to have reached the stage of being able to blog .

Our Library is very busy, with fourteen computer terminals which are always in use, and although our customers are very knowledgeable, it will be great to be able to assist even more and have a better understanding of whats's out there!!

I hope to gain lots of confidence as I work my way through the training and am sure it will enable me to discover other blogs. The public expectations of what a Library and Library Officers provide has changed considerably over the years, so to ensure we are offering the best possible service we need to keep abreast of all new technology.

As a new member of staff, I,m sure reading blogs from other Libraries will be inspiring and assist in expanding my knowledge of all things Library and otherwise.
